On May 19, 2025, DIIV released their emotional new single, “Return of Youth,” their first offering since the well-received 2024 album Frog in Boiling Water. The track explores powerful themes such as fatherhood, optimism, and perseverance, shaped by frontman Zachary Cole Smith’s personal journey. Initially written in anticipation of his first child’s arrival, the song contemplates the uncertainty and wonder of welcoming new life into a chaotic world. Its significance took on new depth after Smith and his family lost their home in the catastrophic Altadena wildfires earlier this year. The song’s accompanying video, directed by Coley Brown, visually narrates the devastation left by the fire, effectively enhancing the introspective tone of the lyrics.
In a moving statement, Smith revealed, “At the start of the year, we lost our home and all our belongings in the Altadena wildfires. While preparing for our second son’s arrival, the world I envisioned in this song vanished instantly.” Despite the heartbreak, he underlined the value of cherishing small, peaceful moments. “I imagined seeing myself through my child’s eyes — a symbolic rebirth filled with vulnerability, fear, and the discovery of beauty,” he added.
“Return of Youth” is currently available for streaming and download on DIIV’s Bandcamp. The band will support the release with a major tour, beginning with a three-night run at L.A.’s Teragram Ballroom from May 24 to 26, and continuing through Australia, Europe, and the UK.
